August/September 2012:  Our Team Rector, Canon Tom Kennar, is presently in Ghana, visiting the Diocese of Ho on behalf of the Portsmouth Deanery.  To read about his adventures (and see some photographs), please click here.

St Mark's Goes Back in Time!

2012:  St Mark has returned the wall at the rear of its Altar to a look that is very close to the original vision of the Church Architect (John Wells-Thorpe).  The stark yet beautiful effect is not universally popular - but replaces a somewhat dated curtain (which also had its opponents!).

The Rector goes to Ghana

February 2012: Our Team Rector, Tom Kennar, is currently in Ghana on a visit.  His online journal can be read by clicking here  He is pictured here presenting a gift of £1,065 to the Bishop of Ho, Matthias.  The gift was given by the Portsmouth Deanery, to help with the cost of paying priests in Bishop Matthias' Diocese (many of whom receive less than £50 per month!)

 Rector Honoured by Rotary Club

Thursday 2nd February 2012:  Our Team Rector, Canon Tom Kennar, was today elected as an Honorary Member of Portsmouth North Rotary Club.  The honour was conferred 'in recognition of the close working relationship between Club and Parish' and is therefore an honour which is rightly shared with the whole Team.  Portsmouth North Rotary Club has strongly supported our Parish Community Cafe over the last three years, providing funds for kitchen refurbishment, new tables and latterly a contribution to the cost of improving our toilet facilities for the use of the whole community.   In turn, Tom has been a regular speaker at Rotary Club meetings (on topics ranging from philosophy and ethics to the work of the Parish),  has hosted an annual Carol Service which has included Rotarians and their families, and has been a judge for Rotary's 'YouthSpeaks' competition.  Receiving the honour today, the Rector said that he was delighted to accept this invitation to become the first non-Rotarian Honorary Member of the Club, and that he looked forward to further partnership working with the Club in the future.

The photograph shows Tom receiving his certificate of Honorary Membership from Club President John Dykes, in the company of Rotarians Derek Wynne (left), Ernest Moss (centre) and Malcolm Gingell (right)

Random Bits of History!

Here is a baptism certificate, from 1904, of the late Annie McCarthy.  Annie's son, daughter in law, and grand-daughter are regular worshippers at St Mark's - following the family tradition.  We recently showed this baptism certificate to some our current young people, after Annie's death at the age of 105.  It was wonderful to be able to demonstrate to our current young folks that they belong to a very ancient tradition of worship in this parish!
